DescriptionSimilar to the representations of the 'screaming Indian,' found in Scholder's plurality of Indian portraiture, this portrayal depicts the face of an Indian in anguish, mouth open and smeared in shadow. A question mark on a feather in the center of the headdress emphasizes the crisis of identity. Employing the characterisitc stylistic distortion associated with his work, Scholder delineates the face using the white ground of the paper, filling in expressive details and background in a nearly monochromatic sepia toned palette.On View
