DescriptionThis object borrows from classical representations of the same subject. Compositional elements, including the figure of Jesus Christ being cradled in the center by his mother, with the attending figures preparing the shroud, form a triangular structure joined by the flow of the drapery. Light shines from the left with the greatest focus on the elongated body of the dead Christ. The figures fill the field, against a resonating dark background achieved through the etching technique of aquatint.
