Illustrator, painter, designer. Born in Las Flores, Baja California on Jan. 19, 1895. In 1909 Mario and his brother Juan moved Los Angeles. Although lacking formal art training, Mario became an employee of Universal Studios. He learned his craft there as a designer, art director, and painter of both miniature scenes and huge cycloramas including backgrounds and special effects for "King Kong" (1933). He studied at Chouinard School of Art during 1934-35 and did illustrations for magazines. After 35 years in the movie industry, he retired in 1951 and moved with his family to Taos, NM. Larrinaga then painted for pleasure and was active in the local art scene. Painting in both representational and abstract styles, his subject matter was derived from travels in Mexico and Hawaii. His last three years were spent in Camarillo, CA; he died on Dec. 15, 1979.
