John Candelario (American, 1916-1993)

John Candelario, a seventh-generation New Mexican, briefly studied physics in California. He returned to Santa Fe in 1938 and began to study photography. In the late 1930s, Candelario met Edward Weston. The two embarked on a photographic tour of northern New Mexico, and Weston shared technical and artistic encouragement in their later correspondence. Candelario also was a friend of Georgia O'Keeffe's, who showed his work to Alfred Stieglitz and to Nancy Newhall, who exhibited his prints at the Museum of Modern Art. A master platinum printer, Candelario produced New Mexico Portfolio in 1943, a sensitive body of portraits and scenes in Hispanic New Mexico. by Marjorie Young http://www.museumofnewmexico.org/mfa/ideaphotographic/artists_candelario.html
