DescriptionThe pastel is executed on black paper. The “Mud Head” is drawn in blue at the center bottom. Eight blue dots travel down from the top center to the center of the head. There is red on the top of his head and gold feathers around his neck. A mud head is one of a Zuñi ceremonial clown fraternity appearing in tribal rites in mud-daubed masks symbolizing an early stage in the development of man. Mullican had an enduring interest in Native American culture
